What is OPEL?

The Oklahoma Partnership for Expanded Learning (OPEL) is a partnership of organizations that recognize the success of and continued need for ELO programs throughout our state. This encompasses all youth development programming that occurs beyond the traditional school day: before school, after school, holiday breaks, weekends, summers and off days for districts with 4-day school weeks. Programs are structured and offer a wide range of learning and enrichment activities that promote the academic, physical, emotional and social development of all children and youth.  

What ls Our Focus?

Our mission is to build and sustain a statewide alliance that connects partners, promotes quality and advances public policy to increase expanded learning opportunities.

Our vision is that all Oklahoma families have access to nurturing, engaging, empowering and purposeful expanded learning opportunities of excellence.

Why OPEL?

Did you know...

•11% (or 68,751) of Oklahoma’s K-12 students currently participate in after school programs. This includes 11,604 children in programs supported by the U.S. Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning centers initiative, the only federal program dedicated to after school.

•In Oklahoma, 20% of youth are left unsupervised from 3pm – 6pm. This percentage consists of approximately 130,367 students in our state.

•77% of Oklahoma parents support public funding for expanded learning programs.

OPEL is on a mission to connect partners and support their work by providing resources like this publication that help increase quality expanded learning opportunities for Oklahoma’s youth.
